Atmospheric Momentum Roughness Applied to Stage-Discharge Relationships in Flood Plains
نویسندگان
چکیده
A numerical model is developed to determine the flow depth and discharge relationship for turbulent flows over vegetated flood plains. The model is based on the turbulent boundary layer similarity concepts developed for atmospheric and pipe flow hydraulics. Here, the Darcy–Weisbach formula is modified to account for vegetative resistance by application of surface roughness lengths developed from atmospheric methodologies. Such roughness lengths are well defined for many natural surfaces and can be determined from existing databases of vegetative surfaces or directly measured for specific sites. The model estimates of the flood flow discharges from a natural site are compared to observed data. The results show very good agreement with errors on the order of 7–8%. A sensitivity analysis was conducted to evaluate the effect of channel characteristics on discharge. DOI: 10.1061/~ASCE!1084-0699~2003!8:2~99! Stage-Discharge Prediction for Converging Compound Channels with Narrow Floodplains
Momentum transfer between the main channel and the side flood plains tends to increase the floodplain shear whereas the main channel shear decreases. The increase and decrease in shear are greatly influenced when a compound channel is with non-prismatic flood plains. In converging compound channels water flow on the floodplain crosses over water flow in the main channel, resulting in increased ...
متن کاملIdentification of Roughness in Compound Channels
An accurate estimation of roughness coefficients is of vital importance in any open channel flow study. In flood routing in natural rivers, most channels have compound sections and the roughness values in main channel and flood plains are usually different. In order to have more accurate results, the roughness of main channel and flood plains should be considered separately. It is possible to i...

Although many researchers have studied the flow hydraulics in compound channels, there are still many complicated problems in determination of their flow rating curves. Many different methods have been presented for these channels but extending them for all types of compound channels with different geometrical and hydraulic conditions is certainly difficult. In this study, by aid of nearly 400 ...

During recent years, increasing exploitation of groundwater aquifers has caused a substantial and sharp drop in groundwater table in the plains of Iran. Artificial discharge of aquifer using flood spreading in plains is an approach that has been implemented in many parts of the country so far. In this method, by flowing flood into the aquifer, will control flooding and soil conservation. In add...
